Reiterspiele 1956
One sheet This poster, titled "Reiterspiele der XVI. Olympiade," is the official advertisement for the equestrian events of the 1956 Summer Olympics, which were uniquely held in Stockholm, Sweden, while the rest of the Games took place in Melbourne, Australia.
Key Facts About the Poster

Artist: It was designed by the Swedish painter John Sjösvärd (1890–1958), who specialized in military and equestrian themes.
Design Inspiration: The central figure of a classical rider on a horse was inspired by the ancient Greek reliefs of horsemen on the Parthenon frieze in Athens, intended to bridge ancient and modern Olympic traditions.
Historical Context: This event remains one of only two times in modern history where Olympic events were split between two different countries. The 1956 Games were also the first to be held in two different hemispheres during the same year.

Why Stockholm?
The equestrian competitions had to be moved from the host city of Melbourne because of Australia's strict six-month quarantine laws for foreign horses. Rather than cancel the events, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) selected Stockholm to host them in June 1956, nearly five months before the Melbourne Games began in November.
