The Fall of Icarus
Fine Art, Henri Matisse,
The Fall of Icarus by Henri Matisse.
The piece is part of Matisse's book titled Jazz, which was published in 1947. The book contains 20 plates of images created using a stencil technique called "pochoir". The illustrations were based on maquettes of cut and pasted colored papers. The work depicts the mythological figure Icarus, who is shown against a royal blue night sky after flying too close to the sun and melting the wax on his wings.
