Plot Overview
The film is a non-linear epic tracing human evolution. It begins with prehistoric hominids discovering tools after encountering a mysterious alien monolith. Millions of years later, in 2001, another monolith is found on the Moon, which sends a signal to Jupiter.
The spacecraft Discovery One is sent to investigate, manned by Bowman, Poole, and the sentient, increasingly erratic supercomputer HAL 9000. The mission culminates in a "mind-bending" journey through a Star Gate, leading to the next stage of human evolution.
