Original comic book art on illustration board This specific page is part of the story titled "B.E.M." (Bug-Eyed Monster), which first appeared in the very first issue of Love and Rockets (Volume 1, Issue #1), self-published in 1981 by the Hernandez brothers and later picked up by Fantagraphics Books. The story and artwork are by Gilbert Hernandez.
"B.E.M." serves as an early prototype for much of Gilbert's later work, including the introduction of the major character Luba (the large-breasted woman in the final panels), although her portrayal here is different from her later established continuity in the fictional town of Palomar. The story itself is a satirical take on sci-fi and monster comics, featuring an escaped creature and a detective named Castle Radium. |
