Bugatti Type 57S Atlantic Information
The Bugatti Type 57S Atlantic is one of the most famous and exclusive pre-war classic cars in the world, with only four original models ever made between 1936 and 1938.
Designer: Jean Bugatti, son of the company's founder Ettore Bugatti.
Key Feature: The car is instantly recognizable by the signature raised seam running vertically from front to back, a design choice originally necessitated by the use of highly flammable Elektron (magnesium) body panels on the prototype (which could not be welded).
Rarity: Only three of the original four Atlantics are known to survive. Fashion designer Ralph Lauren and the Mullin Automotive Museum are among the owners of the surviving models. The fourth, Jean Bugatti's personal "La Voiture Noire" (The Black Car), disappeared during World War II and remains one of the great mysteries in automotive history. |
