US 3 sheet movie poster for the 1960 American science-fiction film,
The Angry Red Planet, directed by Ib Melchior. The film, also known by alternate titles such as Invasion of Mars and Journey to Planet Four, stars Gerald Mohr, Nora Hayden, Les Tremayne, and Jack Kruschen.
Key Details
Plot The movie follows the sole two survivors of the first manned mission to Mars, one of whom is traumatized. The story unfolds as a flashback detailing their expedition to the red planet, where they encounter monstrous alien life forms and receive a warning for mankind.
Production Filmed on a tight budget of just $200,000 in only nine days, the production used a unique, low-cost "CineMagic" process for the Martian surface scenes. This technique involved combining hand-drawn animations with live-action footage and tinting the resulting solarized black-and-white film in red, which also helped camouflage the low-budget monsters and scenery.
Creatures The film features several bizarre creatures, most notably a 40-foot tall "rat-bat-spider-crab" monster, which was actually a 15-inch marionette.
Release The film was distributed by American International Pictures (AIP) and often shown as part of a double feature. |
