Concert poster famous psychedelic concert poster known as the
"Zig-Zag Man" poster. It advertises shows by Big Brother and the Holding Company (with Janis Joplin) and the Quicksilver Messenger Service at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco on June 24 and 25, 1966.
Key Information
Artists: The poster was designed by the acclaimed psychedelic art duo Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse. They incorporated the iconic logo from the French Zig-Zag rolling papers company into their artwork.
Significance: This is one of the most iconic posters from the era, known as Family Dog series number FD-14. The artists included a humorous disclaimer at the bottom: "What you don't know about copying and duplicating won't hurt you," as the design was technically a copyright infringement of the Zig-Zag brand's famous Zouave soldier logo. Ironically, this poster became one of the first rock posters to be widely counterfeited and pirated after the show.
Venue & Light Show: The event was promoted by Chet Helms' Family Dog organization at the Avalon Ballroom, with a light show provided by Bill Ham. |
