US military recruitment poster, propaganda, political, 30x40, James Mongomery Flagg, Stone lithograph
Poster was folded in half horizontally. It was received with two tape stains. Additionally, there were numerous small tears along the edges, the most noticeable of which extends from the right border through the "U" of "YOU". Small amount of paper loss at top left. |
Poster was examined by hand and microscope photography.
Poster was washed with Orvus and water, and then mounted to canvas and masa with water soluble adhesive. Restoration was performed using airbrush, watercolor and colored pencil. Poster was imprinted via silkscreen with split fountain red and black ink in bottom left margin with Poster Mountain fingerprint-logo. |
This poster is most likely an authentic World War I U.S. Army recruitment poster from 1917.
While the Uncle Sam image was used again during World War II, the red and blue borders were only used during World War I. There is also a small copyright text at the bottom below the red border that reads "Copyright, 1917, Leslie-Judge Co., NY". This text can be found on other WWI "I Want You" posters.
When examined under a microscope, this poster shows the ink pattern typical of an offset lithographic print. |
