THE WOLF MAN

Fake The Wolf Man U.S. lobby card, Universal, 1941, Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi
Examination under black-light, light table, digital imaging, tactile and visual observation. Documentation by Lindsay Simmons of Poster Mountain Inc.
THIS POSTER WAS NOT CONSERVED OR RESTORED BY POSTER MOUNTAIN INC. This lobby card was received via mail and has been signed by its owner on the reverse. Lobby card is a reproduction printed from an ink jet (non impact) printer in a style intending to replicate a collotype or offset lithography process. The card measures 35.3cm x 27.7cm and is thicker than an original lobby card. The surface shows several anomalies: significant striations throughout, deep masking cuts, paint speckling, a lack of detail in the Wolf Man’s body, and blurry fine print. Microscopic examination confirms that this card has been printed from an ink jet printer. Areas of white reveal the CMYK printer pattern spray dots, text edges are blurred and the solid colors are not true. A side view shows a thick layer of paint covering new, stark white paper on top of older paper. A heated vacuum press was probably used to fuse the papers of this card together. Under a black light the card fluoresces and shows that the green section on the left has been airbrushed, as has the border, and the white lettering has been painted in certain areas with a brush. Other areas of the card have been touched up with colored pencil.
