MONK'S STANDARD AMERICAN MAP OF NORTH AMERICA 1859
1859 "ROLL-UP" SCHOOL MAP OF NORTH AMERICA, 78" X 78" (2 LARGE PAPER PANELS OVERLAPPED HORIZONTALLY), VARNISH ON FACE, ORIGINALLY MOUNTED TO THIN FABRIC, ATTACHED WITH FINISHING NAILS TO WOOD DOWEL (SANDWICH) ACROSS TOP, AND HALF-MOLDING ON BOTTOM. BADLY DAMAGED AND STAINED THROUGHOUT. ORIGINAL FABRIC IS EXTREMELY DIRTY WITH HEAVY SOOT AND WATER DAMAGE IT HAS SEPARATED IN LARGE AREAS FROM THE VERSO AND SHOWING SIGNS OF PREVIOUS MOLD.

Procedures

AS PER CLIENTS' REQUEST, HANGERS TOP AND BOTTOM WERE CAREFULLY REMOVED AND RETAINED. OBJECT WAS DEMOUNTED FROM OLD SUBSTRATE BY SOAKING IN COLD WATER BETWEEN MYLAR SHEETS FOR 15 MINUTES AND OLD FABRIC WAS MANUALLY REMOVED AND DISCARDED, PANELS WERE MANUALLY SEPARATED AND TREATED INDIVIDUALLY TO SIMPLE REPEATED RINSES WITH COLD WATER ON A SLANTED TABLE. A NEW CANVAS MOUNT WAS PREPARED USING #12 COTTON DUCK AND 70 GRAM JAPANESE MASA PAPER. MAP PANELS WERE FLATTENED MANUALLY AND PASTED (WITH ZEN SHOFU, CMC AND WATER REVERSIBLE PVA MIXTURE) AND MOUNTED TO PREPARED CANVAS, ONCE AGAIN OVERLAPPED. AFTER NATURALLY CURING FOR 6 DAYS, MAP WAS CUT OUT AND ORIGINAL DOWEL HANGERS WERE RE-ATTACHED USING GALVANIZED STAPLES FOR THE BOTTOM AND GALVANIZED FINISHING NAILS FOR THE TOP.

Conclusion

PROJECT COMPLETED ON 08/16/2010, NO RESTORATION WAS PERFORMED. Future reversal of this conservation can easily be achieved by soaking object in cold water and manually peeling away backing materials.
