Obersular Umlaufmotor
One sheet Ludwig Hohlwein, Motorenfabrik Oberursel
was a German manufacturer of aircraft engines, with the poster specifically advertising their "Oberurseler Umlaufmotor" rotary engine. The artwork for this vintage poster, which is associated with WWI-era German aviation, was created by the German graphic designer Ludwig Hohlwein around 1914.
The company's rotary engines, including licensed copies of French designs, were used in a number of early German fighter aircraft, most famously the Fokker Dr.I triplane piloted by the "Red Baron," Manfred von Richthofen. The rotary engine design, in which the cylinders and propeller rotate around a stationary crankshaft, provided a good power-to-weight ratio and air-cooling, making it suitable for light fighter planes.
Today, the factory in Oberursel is part of Rolls-Royce Deutschland and is considered the oldest surviving aircraft engine factory in the world.
