Carmen Jones
24 sheet, Carmen Jones
is a 1954 film adaptation of the 1943 Broadway musical of the same name, which in turn is an adaptation of Georges Bizet's 1875 opera, Carmen. The film is notable for its all-Black cast, starring Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte. Dorothy Dandridge's performance as Carmen earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, making her the first African American woman to receive this honor.
Synopsis
Set during World War II in the American South, the story follows Carmen Jones (Dorothy Dandridge), a seductive and independent parachute factory worker. She catches the attention of handsome corporal Joe (Harry Belafonte), who is engaged to his kindhearted fiancée, Cindy Lou.
After Carmen gets into a fight at the factory, Joe is tasked with escorting her to a civilian jail. Carmen, a woman who values her freedom above all else, uses her charms to seduce Joe, causing him to neglect his duties and go AWOL from the army. The two flee to Chicago together, but Carmen quickly grows bored with their confined life and Joe's possessive nature.
Carmen eventually leaves Joe for a rising prize-fighter named Husky Miller. In a final, tragic confrontation outside the stadium on the night of Husky's big fight, Joe confronts Carmen and, in a fit of rage after being rejected, strangles her to death. The film concludes with the sound of the cheering crowd from inside the stadium, a stark contrast to the tragic ending of Carmen and Joe's passionate and doomed affair.
