Plot: The film is based on a true story of a mass escape by Allied prisoners of war from a German POW camp (Stalag Luft III) during World War II. The prisoners' goal was not only to escape but also to force the Nazis to divert valuable resources to search for them.
Accuracy: The film is largely accurate in depicting many details of the real escape, including the camp's layout and the fact that only three men successfully made it to freedom. The famous motorcycle jump performed by Steve McQueen's character, Captain Virgil Hilts ("The Cooler King"), was a dramatic addition for the film and was actually performed by stunt driver Bud Ekins.
