Star Wars
One sheet video poster
original 1977 U.S. "Style A" one-sheet movie poster for Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV – A New Hope). This iconic artwork was created by artist Tom Jung and has become a staple of pop culture.
Key Details
Artist: The poster was designed and painted by American illustrator Tom Jung in 1977.
Artwork Style: Jung was given the theme of "good versus evil" and decided to represent this using Luke Skywalker's lightsaber as a symbol of a cross, with the menacing Darth Vader and the Death Star in the background.
Characters: It prominently features illustrations of the main cast, including Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo (implied, not fully visible), Darth Vader, and the droids C-3PO and R2-D2.
Production Notes:
The droids were added to the poster later by a different artist as an afterthought.
George Lucas reportedly found the initial artwork "too dark" and commissioned other artists to create different styles of posters (Style B, C, and D) for the film's extended theatrical run.
