Career: Nicola gained global fame for nearly 50 years with his lavish magic show that sometimes involved up to 50 tons of equipment.
Tours: He made four world tours between 1910 and 1939, visiting places like China, India, Africa, Australia, and South America.
Rivalry: He was considered a major contemporary and rival of the famous escape artist Harry Houdini.
Notable Illusions: His act included grand illusions such as making an elephant disappear from the stage and various escape acts, including freeing himself from a straitjacket while hanging upside down from a building.
Show's End: His entire show was tragically lost when the ship carrying his equipment struck a mine and sank in Singapore Harbor in 1939, at the outbreak of World War II.
