Judgement of Paris
Fine art by Salvador Dali Le Jugement de Paris
(The Judgment of Paris) is a limited edition drypoint etching with stencil in colors by the Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, from his "Suite mythologique nouvelle" series. Created in 1971, the artwork depicts the Greek mythological tale of the same name.
About the Artwork
Mythological Subject: The artwork illustrates the story of the Judgment of Paris, a contest among the three goddesses Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite to determine who was the fairest. Paris, the prince of Troy, was chosen to be the judge and awarded a golden apple to Aphrodite, who had bribed him with the promise of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta. This event ultimately led to the Trojan War.
Artistic Style: Dalí's interpretation is rendered in a delicate, sketch-like quality with some use of color. In some versions, the setting of the artwork evokes Port Lligat, Dalí's hometown in Spain, which he frequently used as a backdrop in his works.
Medium: The piece is a drypoint etching with stencil in colors on paper. There are multiple versions of the print, published in different years, with varying edition sizes.
The artwork is part of the broader "Suite mythologique nouvelle" and "Hommage to Albrecht Durer" suites, which are series of etchings and lithographs created by Dalí that draw on ancient Greek mythology.
