Maurin Quina (Green Devil)
Vintage Italian Advertising Poster by Leonetto Cappiello. Poster is professionally and nicely linenbacked with no linen margins.
Poster has many tiny white spots in the black background that appear to be normal printing errors.
Poster displays slight planar distortion (waviness).
Poster has areas in the black background that have a different texture than the rest of the background. There is fracturing in the black ink around the yellow letters where the black ink traps (covers) the yellow ink.
There is a small crease near the bottom in the letter "R" in Maurin where there is minor ink loss probably due to abrasion to the peak of the crease.
There are a few spots of extremely minor, professional restoration in the black background. Most likely performed using colored pencil, or watercolor. The restoration was done very well.

Procedures
Poster was examined visually, under magnification, on a light table and through tactile means. Conclusion
The client stated that the poster while in a frame came into contact with moisture which most likely caused the planar distortion resulting in the poster coming into unusual contact with the glazing inside the frame which caused the areas of different texture in the black background and possibly the fracturing of the black ink around the letters due to expansion of the paper. In order to restore the poster into plane (flatten it), it would need to be relined which is often a risky procedure. Relining it could lead to additional damage to the paper, and would not address the aforementioned areas in the black, therefore relining is not recommended. Most likely the only way to visually restore the areas in the black background, it would need to be masked off and airbrushed which would probably devalue the poster. The areas of fracturing around the letters could easily be restored with colored pencil.
