Albrecht Durer
Fine art etching First State, Joachim and the Angel
by Albrecht Dürer
This is a woodcut print titled Joachim and the Angel by the German artist Albrecht Dürer. It was created around 1504 and is part of a larger series called The Life of the Virgin. The print depicts the biblical story of Joachim, the father of the Virgin Mary, who has been praying in the wilderness after his offering at the temple was rejected due to his childlessness. In this scene, an angel appears to him to announce that his wife, Anna, will soon bear a child. Dürer's work is known for its intricate detail and technical mastery of the woodcut medium.
This print is part of a series of 19 woodcuts, which Dürer started after 1500 and completed around 1510–1511. The series as a whole tells the story of Mary's life, from her birth to her coronation.
