FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN
THIS POSTER WAS NOT CONSERVED OR RESTORED BY POSTER MOUNTAIN.
The window card image of the Wolfman and Frankenstein scene is printed by offset lithography on original paper. Upper and lower sections are blank, paper color and yellow color respectively. Lower yellow section is paper original to the time period of printing. Upper section has been painted to the point where it cannot definitively be determined what kind of paper is under the paint. The reverse is an original board backing acquired from another original window card.
Reverse, notice the tide lines in the lower third.
"E" in "Role".
"F" in "Frankenstein".
The girl's eye.
Frankenstein's mouth.
The heavily restored Universal logo.
Side view from the middle section of the window card. Notice the white paper in between the lower layer (left) of cardboard and the upper layer of image.
The lower section appears to be almost entirely comprised of cardboard, no substrate paper in between.
Top right corner, notice the airbrush paint of the paper color.
Microscopic image of the lower yellow section. The color is true and not created from any modern printer.
The reverse, lower left corner of the window card has been tagged with the PMCS logo and date, it is archived in the PMCS database for reference of authenticity.

Procedures

Examination with light table, black light and microscope.

Conclusion

Condition with previous interventions
This window card curls at the bottom; it is also thicker at the bottom. Looking at the reverse, dark tide lines appear at the bottom section. Touching the area where the lower yellow meets the line of blue, there is a very definite bump. Looking to the side, the lower section measures approx. 1mm, while the middle section measures approx. 0.5mm. Under a microscope, the different areas are not visually consistent, in the middle section a sheet of white paper is in between the paper of the image and the cardboard backing, and the lower section shows a thick layer of cardboard backing. These anomalies suggest that the lower yellow section and the middle section may be from two different cards, while both are still original Wolfman Meets Frankenstein window card pieces. The top section may also not be original to the card, sanding impressions around where the image meets the paper color suggest another attachment, but this is difficult to determine without further in-depth testing due to the heavy layer of paint covering the area.
The window card has been cosmetically restored. The top section as well as the border have received some airbrushing. The image has creasing throughout, especially in the lower right area of the gypsy woman and the woman in the pink dress and the Universal logo. Colored pencil has been used to cover some of the creased areas. The area of green and the stripe of blue have probably been painted.
