WM. H. WEST'S BIG MINSTREL JUBILEE
U.S. MISC. SIZE ONE SHEET, A SENSATION OF 2 HEMISPHERES, THE MARVELOUS RIO BROTHERS, ASTOUNDING, STARTLING, THRILLING FEATS IN MID AIR, NEW YORK NO. 9045, STROBRIDGE LITHO CO., 1900
Procedures
Poster was received mounted to Masonite and thin linen. Two different adhesives were found. Adhering the linen to the board was an unidentified adhesive that was not water soluble, but softened somewhat under water, and could be flexed. The second adhesive attaching the poster to the linen was water soluble. The poster on Masonite was soaked with water and Orvus soap under Mylar for approximately 30 minutes. Due to the insoluble nature of the previous adhesive the poster had to be pulled up from the board using its linen backing. This resulted in significant tearing and damage to the poster. Once removed from the Masonite board, the linen was removed and the poster was resized with gelatin and stabilized with an Okawara paper backing.
After drying on a museum board for 24 hours the poster was removed and then mounted to linen with a water soluble paste.
All losses and tears were filled. The poster was then cosmetically restored: All major sections of color were airbrushed, including the border and title. Smaller areas were restored using water color and colored pencil.
Conclusion
Poster was completed and shipped to owner on 1/04/2010.It is recommended that this poster not be rolled or handled.
