Procedures

A solvent was used to remove the varnish. A small amount of ink was lost during this process. However, it was a necessary step in order to preserve the piece and perform the restoration.

First few layers of cardboard backing was removed. Once the cardboard had been thinned down to two remaining layers, the entire poster was rinsed with water. Then the remaining layers of cardboard and the linen substrate were removed in a wet demount process. The poster was washed with water and Orvus, and then mounted to linen and masa using an organic water soluble adhesive.

Restoration was performed to the border, stain at the bottom, and within the metallic gold sections using airbrush. Missing color within the image was detailed using watercolor and colored pencil.
