The
restoration process begins with only a fragment of the original poster.
The piece is mounted and the text at the bottom is blocked out as the
first layer of paint is applied to the black.
"Masks"
are painstakingly cut from acetate for each color.
With
the bottom mostly restored, work continues on the upper half of the
piece.
Here,
the poster has been masked for the
green background. A single section may require multiple masks for
multiple layers of paint.
After
the green base color has been applied, a separate mask is cut for
the black shadowing.
The
blue will be painted next.
Once
the final layers of paint have been completed, any visible scratches or
fold lines are detailed and carefully filled with colored pencil.
