The
poster had been mounted about 25 years ago using a thick, gooey, wheat
paste. The first step in the restoration was to demount the poster from
the current backing.
To
do this, the entire poster was initially soaked face down in water. The
linen was peeled off first, then the paper. De-mounting a 6-sheet
is a messy and complicated process so for this piece, the work was done
outside.

Next, the panels were separated.
The poster was actually in thousands of small pieces, all soaking
wet, and covered with a thick, slippery slime, almost like a "poster
soup." The work is extremely difficult due to the delicate nature of
the piece, and great care was taken to salvage as much as
possible.

Once the poster was remounted, detailwork was performed to restore the
image to like new.
All together, over 65 hours of work went
into this piece, but you can definitely see the results in the finished
poster.
