Join The Waves
One sheet 1942 recruitment poster, titled
"It's a Woman's War Too!", was created by artist John Philip Falter for the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) program during World War II.
The WAVES Program
The WAVES was the women's branch of the U.S. Naval Reserve, established in July 1942 to "free up a man to fight". By enlisting women for essential shore-based duties in the continental U.S., the Navy could send more male personnel to sea for active combat.

Scope of Service: Over 86,000 women served in the WAVES by the end of the war.
Roles: While many held clerical jobs, WAVES also worked as radio operators (as depicted in this poster), air traffic controllers, aviation mechanics, and even top-secret code breakers.

Poster Details & Artistry
The artist, John Falter, was a renowned illustrator who created over 300 recruitment posters for the government during his own service in the Navy.

The Subject: The woman in the poster is widely believed to be based on an official Navy photograph of Virginia L. Scott, taken in March 1943 at the Radio School in Madison, Wisconsin.
Imagery: Falter aimed to depict WAVES as simultaneously "glamorous and serious," showing them performing technical, "manicure-marring" work like operating radios while maintaining a conventional feminine appearance with lipstick and nail polish.
